THE TENNIS HALL AND THE FUTURE
Stockholms Tennishall is a venerable hall with a fantastic history. The hall's lease expired in 2001, and the intention was then for the hall to be demolished and a park to be created where the hall stands. Fortunately, there was public opinion against closing the hall, and it has remained ever since.
Over the years many people have campaigned for the hall to be allowed to stay. Among them are Tennishallens Vänner (Friends of the Tennis Hall), which consists of all kinds of people who have had anything to do with Stockholms Tennishall – elite players, tennis coaches, recreational players, tennis school pupils, parents and people who simply dislike the idea of tearing down a functioning sports facility that keeps more than 1,000 children and 4,000 recreational players active every week – in order to build a park or a football pitch.
Through petitions, newspaper articles, radio and TV news, and lobbying of politicians and city officials, it has been shown that nothing is impossible!
Officially the plans are still the same – Stockholms Tennishall is to be moved to Stadshagens Idrottsplats is the latest proposal – but there have been many proposals over the years, and we have learned that in the world of politics and city officials things can change in two nanoseconds – and they do.
That is precisely why it would not surprise us if in 2026 we get the chance to celebrate the hall's 50th anniversary at the same place where it was once built.
The tennis hall is open to everyone and is fully booked most months of the year by people of all ages.
