History
Stockholms Tennishall was built in 1976 by Jan-Erik Lundqvist, one of Sweden's greatest and most successful tennis players of all time. When it was built, the hall was given a 25-year ground lease with the City of Stockholm, and the intention was for the hall to be demolished as early as 2001. That did not happen. The lease has been extended in stages and, following a decision by the Land Committee (Marknämnden) on 13 October 2005, the hall may now remain until a new hall is ready in the surrounding area.
The hall is located on classic sports ground. As early as the 1930s there were nine clay courts here, and close by, where Kristinebergs IP is now located, lay the legendary Stockholm Velodrome, where cycling and motorcycle competitions were held in the 1920s and 1930s. The area has always been associated with sport and tennis – and, paradoxically, the city block where the hall is located is called “Tennisbollen” (“the Tennis Ball”) . . .
Janne Lundqvist had a vision and a dream of building a hall that promoted tennis among the broad masses. In the 1960s and 70s, tennis was something of a snob sport. Tennis for everyone was Janne's slogan when he built the hall. No club membership and moderate prices. This was probably what made the city well-disposed and willing to provide both land and a municipal guarantee. We hope the city will be just as well-disposed in the future and that we can carry Janne's tradition forward.
Janne retired after a job well done in the summer of 2004, and the hall continues to be run by Stockholm Tennis AB, owned by a couple of regulars at the hall who will try to keep the hall alive in Janne's spirit – with some small changes . . . but still with the same motto:
Tennis for the people and people for tennis
Björn Borg has generously donated a large part of his legendary rackets to the hall (see the picture above!). The classic wooden rackets from memorable finals hang neatly framed on the “Björn Borg Wall” together with descriptive text. The photographer Jakob Forsell has also contributed a collection of memorable black-and-white pictures of Björn, which hang in the clubroom. You will also find rackets, pictures, autographs and more from many other world stars in our collection.
That alone is worth a visit!
